Ellana provided cost estimating to the Owner’s Representative, Zubatkin, for a new 20,000-square-foot biomedical research and laboratory building, constructed atop the footprint of an existing building, slated for demolition. The Biomedical Research and Innovation Center (BRIC) supports medical and interdisciplinary microscope research and features flexible spaces to facilitate cross-collaboration. It is the first new building on the campus since 1988.
The new building, designed by Studio Gang, is a self-sustaining building with timber framing, a clerestory glass system that invites natural light, and a geothermal system for heating and cooling with rainwater harvesting. The team “grafted” materials that splice existing building elements (roof decking, steel columns and beams from original building) and included new frame and glass elements.
The BRIC invites researchers from other institutions to utilize its advanced technological tools, filling a gap in microscopy resources currently available in the Long Island region. The new microscopy center represents an investment in the university’s architectural, educational, and environmentally conscious presence, focusing on the themes of sustainability, innovation, technology, interdisciplinary collaboration, enhancement of student life and the university’s research enterprise.
