MTA ADA System-Wide Accessibility Study - Urbahn

New York, NY

The MTA ADA System-wide Accessibility study is a review of multiple stations across the five boroughs of the city of New York for their compliance with ADA requirements; and, what it takes to update those stations to todays ADA standards. This is an immense undertaking in which multiple design consultants are retained to tackle this project, Urbahn Architects being one of them, as there are well over 100 stations involved in the overall project. Ellana has to date (July 2019) evaluated 60 stations for the upgrades conceptually designed by Urbahn Architects. Each station is evaluated with 3 alternative approaches, each requiring an estimate to allow the MTA the ability to determine the most efficient design with which to move forward. Some stations are elevated (typically the outer boroughs of Bronx, Queens, & Brooklyn), some are at grade (typically Staten Island), and others are underground (Manhattan and some of the outer boroughs). Each of these station types has its’ own construction challenges and is evaluated differently from the other; and, in some instances will even require the purchase of real estate from private owners and land development.
